Evert Stenlund, Uytdehaage

Jochem Uytdehaage, 9 July 1976

During the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City 2002, speed skating took a new giant leap into the future. Arguably, the foremost performance was Jochem Uytdehaage’s 12.58.92 on 10k, the first time the 13-minutes barrier was broken. Two weeks before he took his first gold on 5k. Other great achievements were accomplished by the American Derek Parra and the Russian Dmitrij Sjepel, who accompanied Uytdehaage to the top of Adelskalendern. During the season Uytdehaage also became both European and World Champion.
